5 Bible Verses For Anxiety (Especially for Eating Disorders or in recovery)

by

Not everyone who struggles with anxiety has an eating disorder, but I believe most people with an eating disorder wrestle with anxiety—or at least constant worry, especially around food.

While I’m fully recovered and no longer experience anxiety around food, that doesn’t mean anxiety doesn’t creep into other areas of my life. For me, I believe it’s often spiritual warfare—and the most powerful weapon against it is the Word of God.

The best way to fight anxious thoughts is to memorize Scripture, meditate on truth, and have verses ready to turn to when emotions bubble up. Here are my top 5 Bible verses for anxiety—especially for those walking through recovery from eating disorders or mental health battles.

1. 1 Peter 5:7 — “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

This verse is short, simple, and easy to memorize—but it holds so much power.
God cares for you. He doesn’t want you to carry your anxiety alone. He wants us to come to Him with our burdens and trust Him to handle what we can’t.

When I feel anxious or overwhelmed, I literally pray and picture myself tossing my worries to God, knowing He can catch them and carry what I was never meant to.

2. Matthew 6:34 — “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

This verse always makes me smile—because it’s just so honest.
God, in His all-knowing wisdom, reminds us not to worry about tomorrow because there will always be new troubles. Anxiety is often rooted in fear of the unknown—what’s next, what might happen, what we can’t control.

But God tells us clearly: Just don’t worry. Take it one day at a time, and trust Him with the rest.

3. Isaiah 41:10 — “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God is with you. Period.
If you’re walking through an eating disorder, substance abuse, habitual sin, or even just trying to hold on to the “I’m doing okay” streak—He will strengthen you. He will uphold you. He will walk with you through the fear.

This verse reminds me that I’m never alone in the battle against anxiety.

4. Psalm 34:4 — “I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.”

Pray. And then pray some more.
If you’re anxious, call out to God. He will answer. He will deliver you.

I prayed for years—begging God to take away my anxiety, to free me from my eating disorder, to bring peace to my mind. And through Scripture, faith, and surrender, He did. He supernaturally changed my life and brought healing.

Recovery is possible. But we must seek Him.

5. Psalm 56:3–4 — “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere flesh do to me?”

This one hits so deeply for those in the thick of recovery.
Eating disorders cause fear—fear of food, fear of loss of control, fear of your own body. But when fear comes, this verse reminds us to trust God above all else.

If I trust God, why would I be afraid?
My flesh doesn’t rule me—God does. And that truth brings so much freedom.

Final Encouragement: There Is Hope for You

If you’re battling anxiety, disordered eating, substance abuse, or habitual sin—you’re not alone, and there is hope in Jesus.

God saw what this world would be like. He knew what we would struggle with. And He gave us His Word as a weapon and a comfort. We don’t have to live stuck in shame, fear, or anxiety. Through Christ, we can—and will—heal.
